Bula vinaka
In this past month we've lost one Team member but gained a few with the EDF9
Advisors coming on board.
5 countries, Fiji, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu
have appointed country interns.
MapServers have been installed in Fiji, Kiribati, Tonga and Vanuatu. Papua
New Guinea is next leaving only Samoa, Solomon Islands and Tuvalu from the
EDF8 countries.

REGIONAL
* New appointments have been made within the last month. These include:
- Dr Arthur Webb - Coastal Processes & Aggregates Adviser (EDF9); Arthur
joins us from Southern Cross University, Lismore, NSW, along with his wife
Louisa and three daughters Evelyna (10), Benaata (9) and Sarina (8).
- Ms Litea Biukoto - Hazards Assessment Adviser (EDF9).
- Ms Titeema Auatabu - Kiribati Country Intern.
- Mr Arnold Lakamanga - PNG Country Intern
- In addition, due to the particularly difficult circumstances in the
Solomon Islands, the Country Intern responsibilities have been split
between: Mr Donn Tolia, Mr David Sivaonao, Mr Isaac Lekelalu, and Mr Thomas
Toba.
* Reginald Sanday (EDF8 Resource Economist) has recently resigned from SOPAC
to take up an AusAID position in Port Moresby. The position has since been
advertised, as has the Project Assistant's position.
* The EDF Project Monitoring Team, Francesco Affinito and Mercedes Marin met
with Russell Howorth, SOPAC Deputy Director and the Project Team, June 16
and 21 respectively.
* The Draft Pacific Regional Position Paper for the Second World Conference
on Disaster Reduction was adopted by a multi-stakeholder group of Pacific
Island Country representatives including national disaster managers,
regional and international organisations, donor partners, experts and civil
society groups at the Regional Stakeholders Planning Workshop - Pacific
Preparations for the Second World Conference on Disaster Reduction, held at
the Warwick Hotel, Fiji, 28 - 30 June 2004.
* South Pacific Tsunami Awareness Workshop in Suva, Fiji 01 - 03 July 2004
facilitated by SOPAC and International Tsunami Information Centre, Hawaii
for Cook Islands, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, and
Vanuatu
* Subha Ram, Administration Assistant, participated in the European
Development Fund Training in Nadi, 28 June - 02 July. The training covered
financial and contractual procedures, direct labour operations, and payment
procedures under EDF9.
* PacINET 2004 will be held in Vanuatu, 23 - 27 August. A MapServer
Workshop will be held during PacINET. www.picisoc.org
FIJI
* A hands-on workshop on image rectification was carried out at the
Secretariat, 05 - 09 July. The imagery covers the upper Sigatoka and Navua
catchment areas. Also attending were the Kiribati and Fiji country interns.
* The Landslide Assessment in the Navua catchment is on track. Sandra
Melzner, Michael Bonte and Quan Chung spent 3 days in the field with Peter
Rhodda, Mineral Resources Department, assessing and mapping landslides, 14
-16 July
* Students from International Secondary School (ISS) in Suva are building a
3-D model of the lower Navua catchment based on the DTM, bathymetry and
satellite imagery.
* The 5th Fiji Stakeholder Consultation Meeting was held in Sigatoka on the
2nd of July. 80 participants were present including 72 from the local
communities (Sigatoka River Catchment villages and settlement).
* Quan, Akuila, and Isei Rayawa, Mineral Resources Department, went on a
reconnaissance coastal survey along the Serua coast, 07 July.
KIRIBATI
*Tefau Afeleti, Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, starts a
short-term attachment at SOPAC to scan negatives of historical aerial
photographs. The imagery will be used as a base for temporal coastal change
detection
* Titem Auatabu has just completed her 2-week attachment at SOPAC. Titem
was involved in the Image rectification training and also worked on
developing maps for the MapServer.
* Franck was in Kiribati to re-establish the Server and network connection
in Fisheries Department, and connected Foreign Affairs to the Internet
providing better access to the MapServer.
* Akuila is assisting Faran Redfern in accessing the SOPAC website for
references and dredge photos for his presentation and projects. Faran is a
post graduate student at the University of Waikato in New Zealand. He once
worked for Department of Environment Conservation.
NIUE
* A 3D model of the impact of waves during TC Heta has been developed by
GEMS Australia. This model is being used by PDC to develop a visual
flythrough depicting actual wave run up on land. The product of the
modelling will be presented at the Forum Leaders meeting in September.
PAPUA NEW GUINEA
* Arnold Lakamanga is on 2-week attachment at SOPAC working on the PNG
MapServer uploading data and creating map interface
* Franck Martin, ICT Specialist consulted with stakeholders in Port Moresby
possible sites where the MapServer could be located. The MapServer will be
installed 24 July -10 August. MapServer training has also been planned for
stakeholders.
SOLOMON ISLANDS
* Wolf Forstreuter and Elizabeth Lomani conducted a MapInfo customisation
for Utilities workshop in Honiara, 20 May - 03 June 2004.
* Christine Kuper, an IT graduate from the University of the South Pacific
is on one-month attachment at SOPAC to develop the map interface inside
tikiwiki. Christine is from Western Province in Solomon Islands
* Akuila Tawake, Litea Biukoto, Reginald Sanday, Stephen Booth were on a
two-week reconnaissance of the Project focus areas: Gizo, Marovo Lagoon,
Savo and north coast of Guadalcanal. Meetings were conducted with
aggregates, water and hazard/disaster management stakeholders. The
respective country interns made arrangements for site surveys of their
particular areas.
* Donn Tolia and Isaac Lekelalu traveled with the Team to Western Province.
The trip to Marovo Lagoon provided an opportunity for the International
Waters Programme, University of Queensland and the Project Team to discuss
respective work plans.
* A report on the "Aggregate Resource Analysis of Gizo" has been included in
the Solomon Islands Mission Report.
* Beach profiling and mapping was carried out in Chea and Billy Passage
communities, Marovo lagoon.
* Thomas Toba organised a trip to Savo and Guadalcanal Plains. Prior to the
site visits, consultations were held with the Disaster Management Office. An
Awareness workshop is proposed for the communities on Savo to discuss the
recommendations made in "Workshop On The Volcanic Hazards, Operational
Support Plan And Awareness Programs For Savo Volcano, Solomon Islands"

* David Sivaonao made arrangements for Malaita unfortunately, the trip had
to be cancelled. Consultations with Provincial Government are ongoing.
TONGA
* Akuila Tawake and Arthur Webb will be in Tonga to present the Proposed
Dredging Guidelines and Action Plan to stakeholders at the beginning of
August. They will also work with a consultant doing the EIA study of the
dredge site on Tongatapu.
